A Frozen Strawberry Mango Margarita Treat
There’s nothing like a delicious frozen cocktail to quench your thirst and help cool you down on a warm day!
Man am I glad that the weather is finally getting warmer. The cooler months tend to drag on after a while when we’re stuck inside and can’t enjoy the outdoors. There really is something so enjoyable and calming about just being able to get some fresh air.
We love to enjoy our coffees out on the deck with the kittens in the morning (even better when we can do some work out on the deck as well). In the evenings however, it’s nice to be able to enjoy a cocktail sometimes, and our current obsession is this frozen strawberry mango margarita!
This cocktail uses only 6 ingredients, most of which are always on hand for us, so it goes together quick and easy. Add your ingredients, blend it up in your Vitamix or other high speed blender, pour, and enjoy yourself a delicious homemade frozen margarita.
Why we love this Strawberry Mango Margarita Recipe
No Margarita Mix
Margaritas have always been a favorite mixed drink of mine, especially frozen margaritas. My one qualm about margaritas a lot of the time, though, is I don’t care for premade margarita mixes that you can pick up on the shelf at most liquor stores. They taste sickly sweet to me and the list of ingredients is suspect. Also, why does it have to be that luminescent green/yellow color?
I knew that to truly make a margarita recipe that I could enjoy I would need to eliminate the margarita mix. For this strawberry mango margarita I use fresh squeezed lime juice and a bit of honey, and it turned out spectacularly. You still get that delicious margarita flavor without all the extra added ingredients, and these are ingredients that can easily be on hand all the time for whenever a margarita craving strikes you.
Silver Tequila
Of the 3 tequila types, silver, or blanco, is my preference, and is what I recommend for this frozen strawberry mango margarita. Silver tequila is unaged and gives the purest flavor of the agave plant in your tequila. I am a fan of Milagro Silver tequila, but we’ve also had a lot of success, especially in mixed drinks, with Kirkland Brand Silver Tequila.
Cointreau
A little bit of Cointreau, an orange liqueur, gives this frozen cocktail a bit of brightness and mixes well with the silver tequila. It also compliments the flavors of the strawberry and mango nicely. You could probably use triple sec in place here, but I think it’s worth springing for Cointreau in this recipe.
Unsweetened Frozen Fruit
I really wanted the fruit flavors to shine in this recipe while also keeping this strawberry mango margarita fairly healthy overall, so frozen fruit that has no added sweeteners is the way to go. We get pretty much all of our frozen fruit from Costco; the prices are great and the quality has never disappointed us. Make sure to keep your fruit frozen until ready to make the margarita, as this is what gives you a frozen margarita without having to add ice.
Salt or Sugar Rim
Now I know this is potentially a hot debate with margaritas, but I’m of the opinion that you should do what you enjoy and take your pick of salt rim or sugar rim. Don’t skip this step, however, as this really sets off your frozen cocktail. I’m partial to a salt rim, but Joelle is all about the sugar rim. Whichever you choose, make sure to prep your glass before you make your cocktail so all you have to do is pour and enjoy once your frozen strawberry mango margarita is blended. If you’re like us, it’s easy enough to make one glass a salt rim and the other a sugar rim, too!
To make your salt or sugar rim, prepare a shallow dish with water and a second shallow dish with your salt or sugar. You can purchase margarita salt to use for the rim, but I recommend using Celtic sea salt. It works wonderfully here and really sets off your cocktail. Dip the rim of your margarita glass in the water dish, and then dip the rim into your salt dish or sugar dish. Move it around a bit as needed to get the rim nicely coated. Repeat with as many glasses as you need for your cocktails.
Let’s make our Strawberry Mango Margarita!
This recipe is very easy to make and goes together quickly. Prepare your margarita glasses. Add in your tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and honey to your Vitamix or high speed blender. Then add your frozen fruit on top. I find that our blender handles the frozen fruit a lot better when it has some liquid or something down to help it get started, so I always add in the other ingredients first. Blend on high until everything is combined and it reaches desired consistency.
Be sure not to over process, or you will lose the frozen margarita consistency that you are going for. Pour your strawberry mango margarita into your prepared glasses, using a spatula to get every last delicious bit out of the blender, and enjoy!
If your blender can’t handle frozen fruit, you may need to use fresh fruit or thaw your frozen fruit some before adding it to your blender. It will still be tasty, but you won’t get the same frozen margarita consistency that you do using frozen fruit.
This frozen cocktail is perfect by itself when you want to enjoy a delicious fruity beverage. It also pairs great with dinners tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, and more! Or just mix up a big batch and serve it at a party with chips and some delicious salsas, like our Pineapple Habanero Salsa, our Chipotle Salsa, a Green Chile Peach Salsa, and our Mango Jalapeno salsa. I love them all, but the Pineapple Habanero salsa is an easy favorite with all my friends and family.
