Spicy Green Chile Popcorn
Popcorn is a perfect snack. It tastes wonderful, can be made in so many flavors (including spicy!), can be eaten on the go, and compliments movies perfectly. I love popping up a batch and curling up with Joelle for a movie night or grabbing a tub of the stuff to enjoy when we’re at the theater. It’s one of those snacks that you can always eat and can never seem to stop eating.
While popcorn is an extremely easy snack to make, it’s not always super healthy. I know, I know, that movie theatre butter popcorn is like a drug, but honestly it isn’t the best thing for us (especially in the super-size portions you inevitably purchase while at the movies). This amazing recipe we bring you today packs great flavor while also being a health-conscious choice.
If you’ve been to the blog before, you’ve likely noticed that I am a chile head. Like big time. If you’re joining us for the first time, welcome, and know that I love chile peppers. They add such flavor and depth to recipes, while bringing that heat that seems to be an addiction for me. If, like me, you can’t get enough of great recipes that pack a kick but don’t skimp on flavor, check out my Mango Jalapeno Salsa, my Roasted Hatch Chile Peach Salsa, and my Habanero-Infused Whiskey with Mango and Lime!
This popcorn gets its heat from green chile powder. I bought mine last time we visited Albuquerque (If you haven’t visited, go now!) but you can likely find yours at grocery stores around your area. If you prefer online shopping, follow this link: Green Chile Powder. Nutritional Yeast adds an almost cheesy flavor to the popcorn while keeping it dairy-free. You can find nutritional yeast at most health-food stores. We finish it off with some fresh ground pepper and some Himalayan Sea Salt to make the flavors pop!
We love our Hot Air Popper and use it for popcorn all the time. It gives us a lot of control over the popping (cutting way back on unpopped popcorn Kernels or smoking out the house with a burnt bag of popcorn) and lets us decide exactly what goes into it! If you don’t have an air popper, you can use microwave popcorn bowls or stir crazies as well. Just pop up the popcorn, drizzle your Coconut Oil over the top, give it a stir, and then sprinkle your spices on top. Mix it all up and enjoy! Don’t be afraid to make up big batches of this popcorn, either; it keeps fine in Ziploc bags for several days. And we won’t judge if you eat an entire batch (or 2 or 3) in one sitting!
The Green Chile Popcorn recipe makes a perfect healthy snack idea! This savory homemade flavored popcorn is quick and easy — great for parties or for a late night movie snack!
Ingredients
Scale
1/2 Cup Popcorn Kernels
2 Tbsp Coconut Oil, melted
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground black pepper
1/2 tsp green chile powder
2 tsp nutritional yeast
Instructions
Pop your popcorn kernels (we use the older version of this hot air popper) and melt the coconut oil (we’ve found the microwave to be more effective than the built in thing that comes with most air poppers).
Drizzle oil over popped corn and mix thoroughly to distribute the oil.
Sprinkle salt, pepper, nutritional yeast, and green chile powder over popcorn and shake or stir to coat.
Enjoy!
Notes
Make sure to use a shaker, a spoon, or another utensil to sprinkle the green chile powder onto the popcorn or use gloves to avoid getting chile oil on your hands or skin. It can be very painful!
