No Salt Cajun Seasoning Recipe

Why have I been buying cajun seasonings for so long? I finally decided to mix up my own cajun spice blend the other day while working on cajun sausage and peppers (link), and I’m so glad I did. Making it at home is so simple and uses spices that are already in my spice cabinet. And since I am making it myself I can have total freedom over the salt content, the heat level, and the overall flavor of it.

If you are someone who likes cajun flavors and enjoys cooking cajun recipes or just using cajun seasoning on everything, then it’s definitely worth it to make your own spice blend. Tailor it to you and your family’s preferences, and start enjoying it today!

Why I Love this No Salt Cajun Seasoning Recipe

Packed with flavor

This cajun spice blend is full of amazing flavor and a great balance of all the different spices in it. It’s sure to take any cajun recipe to the next level, and can add great flavor to a host of other dishes as well!

No Salt

A big problem I always seem to have buying cajun seasonings is the salt level. There are some good ones out there for sure, but so many of the brands I’ve tried over the years are just way too salty. This cajun seasoning recipe is salt free, so you don’t have to worry about it making your food too salty. Salt can be a great addition to lots of recipes, but creating a seasoning mix that is salt free gives you total control over the salt levels in all your dishes, while you’re making them.

It’s So Easy!

Using only 7 ingredients, many or all of which you likely have in your spice collection right now, and featuring no ingredient preparation, this seasoning mix goes together in a matter of minutes. Dump your ingredients into a half pint mason jar, put the lid on, give it a good shake, and you’re done.

It’s easily scalable, too. A very simple ratio of 2 parts garlic powder, thyme, paprika, and ground black pepper to 1 part onion powder and oregano, and a ½ part or ¼ part cayenne (depending on how hot you want it) can easily be adjusted to meet your needs. If you need just a little for a recipe, you can make a small batch and have just what you need. Or scale it up to cook for a crowd and/or to have a jar of it on hand in your cabinet.

Make it as hot (or mild) as you want it

I am a chile head and like a lot of spicy food, but I understand that not everyone has the same craving for hot stuff, or tolerance of it, that I do (my wife included). This cajun seasoning is easy to adjust to meet any heat level you need. If you like a good and spicy mix, then use 1 ½ tsp cayenne pepper in this recipe. If you like a milder batch, then use ¾ tsp, or less, in your cajun mix. I’m using standard cayenne pepper powder in this recipe, which is usually around 35k on the scoville scale.

If you really want a hot spice mix, then you can buy 90k cayenne or even 160k cayenne, both of which pack a pretty good punch in them. Just be sure to use sparingly if going for the hotter versions!

A good quality pepper grinder can save you a lot of time and effort when grinding black pepper in quantities like you might need for this recipe. We love this Peugot Pepper Grinder and use it when cooking, making spice mixes, and so much more!

Goes Great with so many Dishes

I may be a little bit of a fan of cajun seasoning and cajun dishes, but I think this seasoning mix goes great in or on so many different things! Make up some delicious cajun skillet sausage and peppers for dinner, or enjoy a big pot of jambalaya. Sprinkle some on chicken and cook it up for an easy tasty main dish for your meal. Sprinkle some on popcorn for a great cajun snack, or season almonds with it and roasted up a healthy cajun snack. It goes great on eggs as well, or tastes amazing on top of our Sourdough Avocado Toast.

So go mix yourself up some of this no salt cajun seasoning recipe, and enjoy!
