A Simple Watermelon Slushie

You can’t go wrong with frozen cocktails, especially when the weather is warm. They’re cool, refreshing, and oh so satisfying.

Here we have a simple and delicious boozy watermelon slush, blended up with Malibu coconut rum and white rum. Add in a little honey for sweetness and some lime juice and you have a tasty slushie recipe to enjoy by the pool, on the deck, or while enjoying time with friends!

Why You’ll Love this Boozy Watermelon Slush

5 ingredients

It doesn’t get much simpler for a frozen cocktail than just 5 ingredients. Fresh watermelon, white rum, malibu coconut rum, lime juice, and honey are all that’s required to make this watermelon slushie recipe. Both white rum and coconut rum are easily found at almost any liquor store (and a lot of grocery stores as well), and the other ingredients are easily found. I recommend fresh lime juice in this slush recipe, but if you have the bottled lime juice, that would work as well.

Just Blend, Freeze, and Enjoy!

Simply add all the ingredients for your rum watermelon slush into your Vitamix or other blender, blend it all up, and then freeze the mixture for 6 hours. I use a 4 Cup pyrex measuring cup to freeze the slush in, but a pitcher or other container works as well. Depending on the size and shape of your container you may need to adjust the freeze time some. It’s not a recipe you can make right away and enjoy, but it’s worth the wait for an incredible boozy watermelon slushie that tastes so good!

Great Balance of Flavors

This frozen rum slush recipe is the perfect balance of watermelon flavor with rum flavor. Some rum slushies taste only like alcohol, while others taste like you waved a bottle over it and called it good. This watermelon slush recipe brings you a great watermelon flavor complimented by a bit of lime juice and enhanced with a nice coconut rum flavor. You’ll be glad you tried it!

What’s in our Rum Watermelon Slush?

Watermelon

Fresh watermelon is the main ingredient in this slushie recipe. You’ll need 4 Cups of chopped watermelon to make 2 servings of this frozen blended beverage. Depending on the size of your melon, you can easily scale this recipe up to make up enough for a crowd or for a party.

If you need a good knife for cutting and chopping watermelons, especially the bigger ones, I highly recommend a Shun Chef’s Knife. This knife cuts through watermelon rind easily and is big enough to make easy work of even larger melons. It’ll stay sharp for years, and Shun offers free lifetime sharpening, so you never have to worry about living with dull knives.

Coconut Rum

This boozy watermelon slushie recipe is made even better with the addition of coconut rum. Malibu coconut rum is my go-to for cocktails and alcoholic recipes, although any coconut rum should work just fine in here. I don’t recommend trading this out, though, since this gives the recipe a nice tropical flavor and really sets it off.

White Rum

This rum slush also features white rum in it. It really has a great balance of flavors and alcohol, so you can taste a bit of the alcohol but it really lets the watermelon, lime, and coconut flavors shine through.

Some rum slushies seem to be so boozy that you can’t taste anything else, so I worked hard to make sure this one has a good balance!

Lime Juice

Lime juice adds a nice brightness to this boozy watermelon slushie recipe and helps bring out the other flavors really well. I highly recommend using fresh squeezed lime juice in this recipe, but bottled lime juice will work in a pinch.

In order to get the most out of your limes, a nice quality lime juicer is essential. This lime juicer is our favorite, and will really get more lime juice out of your limes than I think any other juicer we have used. It’s also set up to do more of the work for you, so you don’t have to put as much pressure into squeezing as you do with other juicers.

Honey

A little bit of honey added into this rum slush gives some sweetness and helps balance out the flavors. Raw honey is great for its health benefits, so go this route if you can. If you would prefer, you can omit the honey to make a frozen cocktail without any added sweeteners, but for overall taste it’s much better with the honey in it.
