Dry Erase Menu Board: Easy Picture Frame DIY

So you know how it goes when you’re trying to change and improve habits, right? You set goals, make plans, start moving forward, and perhaps, if you’re anything like us at least, falter along the way and fail to execute the plans you set that actually get you to your goals. Of late, we’ve felt like this when it comes to working out and eating well, and while I’ll deal with the whole workout routine struggle another day, I think we’ve pinpointed at least part of why we don’t seem to eat as well as we’d like.
You see, quite a while ago we got into the habit of meal planning, which we do pretty much on a weekly basis, and yet off and on for months, we have spells where we don’t actually cook and eat the meals we plan. Instead, we end up grabbing something quick—inevitably less healthful and less satisfying in the end—and as a result, we let produce go bad in the fridge, which I just detest for all sorts of reasons. The planning and intent for the good habits were in place, but we pretty much failed at the follow through.
Thinking about how to correct this, we kept coming back to needing a convenient, visible place to write down the weekly meals and to note any prep we need to do the day before, like soaking nuts/grains/legumes or blending up fruit for Chia Bars that need to dehydrate. Up until this point, we’d kept the meal list on a note on one of our phones or on a scrap piece of paper, and we rarely actually wrote down necessary prep, leading of course to forgetting the prep work and putting off a recipe until the next day or so. Clearly we needed to make a menu board to help us both know when we’re cooking and eating what, but I honestly didn’t want to take the time to make something fancy and super chic at the moment considering our current schedules.
Every year spring is one of the busiest seasons for both of us, and this year has certainly proven worse than most. Free time, and even time for the blog and for housework, has become rather limited, but we want to stick to better eating habits, which means finding a quick and easy solution to the menu board. Like perhaps many of you, we have picture frames in a box in the basement that haven’t found a place yet in the new house (yeah, I know… it’s been three years… oops!), so I grabbed an unused 8”x10”, created a simple menu board in Photoshop, and snagged a dry erase marker from the office.
Voila, a super easy, DIY, dry erase menu board to help us stay on track! Then I made several more boards, to make this project even quicker and simpler for you! Hopefully you can find one you like!
There are several designs with varying degrees of complexity. Each one is designed to print on standard 8.5”x11” printer paper and has dashed lines where you need to cut to fit them into an 8”x10” frame; this way, you don’t lose any of the actual border or artwork when you put the menu board inside the frame.
If, like me, you want to write lots of info down on your shiny new menu board, I encourage you to seek out Expo Ultra Fine Tip Dry Erase Markers. These have WAY finer tips than standard markers (as you may have surmised from their name…). My local stores don’t often carry them, but Amazon does, and they come in lots of fun colors!!
The idea behind this project couldn’t be simpler. Glass makes a fantastic dry erase surface, so grab a picture frame (I recommend an 8”x10”, as that gives you more room to write), print or make a menu board, and that’s it! If you don’t have an 8”x10” lying around, you can hop over to any number of local stores to find one for cheap, or get something fun, classic, or rustic on Amazon (another here?).
To help make this process super simple for you, I created 8 different menu board templates; hopefully you’ll find one that fits your style! If not, you can create your own online, in Word, or even on fun—but not super bright or wild—scrapbook paper! I chose to do this in Photoshop because I’m familiar with the program and my handwriting leaves much to be desired, as you can see in the filled-out pictures of some of these boards.
- 8”x10” Picture Frame
- Menu Board (get 8 boards to choose from for free here! WORDING)
- Dry erase marker (I definitely recommend Ultra Fine Tip Markers
- Scissors or Paper Cutter
- Hanging/Mounting Supplies, if needed (nail/picture hanger, 3M strips, etc.)
Get your Materials Here!
- Choose and print (in color!) your favorite menu board.
- Cut along the dotted lines. I use a Paper Trimmer because I don’t cut in straight lines well. *Shrug* Whatcha gonna do?
- Insert your menu board into your 8×10 picture frame. Add a piece of construction paper or a couple pieces of white printer paper (cut down to size) behind it if needed to make it sturdier or to brighten the menu board a bit if you so desire.
- Hang your nifty menu board on the wall or set it on a shelf!
- Now write out your menu in dry erase marker to help you stay on top of your goals! 😀
